Equipment loss and damage?
Equipment loss and damage?

Robust is a must! This is the primary reason we invented FlipFarm. Gear loss saps both your morale and your bank balance. The FlipFarm system permanently attaches the baskets to the lines which are 24mm polypropylene rope, tested for 40 years in the New Zealand Greenshell mussel industry. The opportunity for gear loss or damage is significantly reduced. Maintenance on gear is almost eliminated, however in the unlikely event of gear damage, such as a high-speed vessel collision, all of the components can be replaced individually.

UPDATE! We are now developing submersible floats which allow the line to be sunk and raised again in minutes to prevent damage to oysters in storms. This will also be very useful in areas which have ice in the winter, or periodic low salinity due to rainfall.

Keeping it clean! The fouling treatment is extremely quick and easy. This will become the job everyone wants to do! Stock and gear hygiene is one of the most important aspects in the production of top quality oysters, having a method that is easy and enjoyable means the job gets done when it needs to be.

High staff costs and turnover?

Labour saving - The time and effort required for farm operations and grading is significantly reduced due to the oysters being emptied into containers on the farm site. This allows grading to be done in the most efficient way with containers also being filled at the grader output, ready for relaying back into FlipFarm baskets. Transport of gear is much easier because only the oysters are handled. Growing gear does not need to be transported, emptied, stored and refilled, in our farming operation this has reduced our grading and on water team by 60%. Being able to use not only fewer staff but staff with a wider range of physical ability is a key benefit.

Keeping ‘em safe! Flatworm and mudworm impact is reduced or eliminated by the ability to keep the gear much cleaner without extra work. On the chance that a flatworm infestation does take hold we have developed an extremely efficient and reliable treatment system which allows an entire farm to be treated in a few hours. Predators such as birds and oyster drills cannot easily reach the oysters as they can with some other systems.

Because the gear remains permanently on the lines there is no need for a large area onshore for grading or spelling gear. Growing equipment is stored on the farm so it is always ready for use. This also provides the opportunity to grade at the farm site with a small barge or purpose built vessel.

FlipFarm baskets provide an ideal environment for even growth and conditioning. Oysters cannot get caught in tight corners allowing them to reposition during basket flipping or during rough weather giving much more consistent shell shape and meat condition. Waterflow is maintained through the ease of keeping the equipment clean.
